Large 4TB - Western Digital WD40EZRX Empty Large 4TB - Western Digital WD40EZRX

Mensaje  loki10 Dom Dic 08, 2013 1:56 pm

Hello to everybody.
I have been happy user of MSHarmonyPack for quite some time and I wan't to thank everybody involved with it's development.

I have question of different nature. While I have been using the 2 TB drive (WD20EARS) for years with no problem I have recently bougth the 4 TB drive (WD40EZRX). And of course problems started immediately.

In short - in doesn't work.

Longer:
At first I thought that it would be the case of MBR vs. GPT partitions. While this still might be an issue the problem seems to be on the kernel level.
Saddly, because I think I have solved the MBR/GPT issue using MBR partition with Acronis (free downloadable from WD site) Extended Capacity Manager to make use of the 2TB+ parts of the disk. The sacrafice would be using two partition.

But it seems that MS450H doesn't recognize such drives.

If disk is in USB enclosure dmesg says:

usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
scsi4 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 4
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

8 4 160650 sda4
8 16 2147483648 sdb

..shows disk as 2 TB.

This have put my hopes high to be able to use at least 2 TB and I will figure out how to use the rest for the PC and other uses.
I have decided to put disk directly (in the cradle) to MS450h and try to initializa it. But this has been even worse.

In the GUI MS450H recognized new disk and offer to format it. But format was very quick and after reboot it starts all over again because nothing has been done.

What is worse is that there aren't the disk in:
root@Venus:~# cat /proc/partitions

8 2 160650 sda2
8 3 4209030 sda3
8 4 160650 sda4

and formating from GUI causes this in dmesg:

---------------------

So, what do you think ?
Obviously the kernel doesn't support disks of this size.

Is there a possibillity to "upgrade" the kernel on the custom firmware you are using on HarmonyPack ?

I saw on the web that 2.6.12.6-VENUS is also used on other media players.
Also, since USB is handling the things better I will be willing to settle for USB only usage.

And finally - the new official firmware from 2013 - does it have new kernel version ? Higher than 2.6.12.6-VENUS ?
I would like to try it but I don't want to trash perfectly functional Harmony Smile

Thanks !

Hello loki,
welcome to the forum, and thanks for the comments.
Wow!!! what a question!! Smile
Very well expressed and with all the logs and info.

Sad to say that i have not the solution, but will try to give some hint and helps.

Regarding the harmony pack, the development was stopped ( I think it is going to be now two years).

I just installed lattest official firmware (2013), and the info of the OS they used is the same:
<<
BusyBox v1.1.3 (2011.04.18-07:22+0000) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/ # uname
Linux
/ # uname -a
Linux Venus 2.6.12.6-VENUS
>>
So really nothing new from them... it is a pity but LG really forgot us right from the begining...

Now, regarding BIG disk. I have working fine the 1.5T disk.
And of course you are the first to try such a big disk Smile

Lets see if someone else, with the information you provide, can help you.
My guess is that first it is needed to fully understand and make it work on a system mipsel32 and that disk, checking what module it is necessary to load, compile, install , etc.
And once all that is clear and fully working fine, then the next step would be to create a new version of harmony pack that include all that investigation.
As you can see, this sounds rather difficult. Not sure if Keltek user keep watching this forum, try sending him a PM and tell him to kindly try to help in the forum in the issue, send him the direct link of the post.
He was in charge of making the format command work in the last version.

Best regards
Victor

Hi, just to add that i found a post regarding a 3T disk.
https://ms450.forosactivos.net/t838-no-me-lee-archivos-avi

Seems like the user finally did 3 partitions of 1T and was working like that ...
